First Sailing - active patrol
U-109 left Kiel under the command of Hans-Georg Fischer on 6th May 1941 and arrived at return on 29th May 1941 after over three weeks.
Hans-Georg Fischer hit one ship on this patrol from convoy HX-126.
  • On 20th May 1941 he sank the British 5,173 ton Harpagus, sailing with convoy HX-126.

U-109 left Lorient under the command of Heinrich Bleichrodt on 18th Jul 1942 and arrived at return on 6th Oct 1942 after eleven and a half weeks.
Heinrich Bleichrodt hit five ships on this patrol.
  • On 7th Aug 1942 he sank the Norwegian 6,030 ton Arthur W Sewall.
  • On 11th Aug 1942 he sank the British 5,728 ton Vimeira.
  • On 3rd Sep 1942 he sank the British 7,173 ton Ocean Might.
  • On 6th Sep 1942 he sank the British 11,449 ton Tuscan Star.
  • On 17th Sep 1942 he sank the British 5,221 ton Peterton.

On the 28th Nov 1942, U-109 left Lorient under the command of Heinrich Bleichrodt and after eight weeks arrived at return on 23rd Jan 1943.

Ninth Sailing - active patrol
U-109 departed under Joachim Schramm from St. Nazaire on 3rd Mar 1943 and arrived at return on 1st Apr 1943 after just over four weeks.
28.04.1943 - 04.05.1943
Tenth Sailing
U-109 left Lorient under the command of Joachim Schramm on 28th Apr 1943 and after six days arrived at return on 4th May 1943.
At 1835 HRS on 4th May 1943 in square BE 45, U-109 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 86 Squadron. U-109 was destroyed in the attack.

Notes for U-109
On 4th May 1943, 86 SQN Liberator of 15th Grp CC RAF (PO J C Green) was headed for convoy HX 236 when U-109 was sighted North-north-east of the Azores. Green attacked with 4 D/Cs at 1835, producing debris consisting of decking and a large oil patch. 52 men lost their lives with U-109.
