Operations information for U-136
22.01.1942 - 01.03.1942
First Sailing - active patrol
U-136 left Kiel under the command of Heinrich Zimmermann on 22nd Jan 1942 for operations in the North Atlantic and arrived at return on 1st Mar 1942 after five and a half weeks.
Heinrich Zimmermann hit four ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy HX-174, one was from convoy ON-63 and two were from convoy SC-67.
  • On 5th Feb 1942 he sank the British 925 ton HMS Arbutus, sailing with convoy ON-63.
  • On 11th Feb 1942 he sank the Canadian 925 ton HMCS Spikenard, a member of convoy SC-67.
  • On 11th Feb 1942 he sank the Norwegian 4,028 ton Heina, part of convoy SC-67.
  • On 17th Feb 1942 he sank the British 6,914 ton Empire Comet, from convoy HX-174.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 24th Mar 1942, U-136 left St. Nazaire under the command of Heinrich Zimmermann for operations in the West Atlantic and after just over eight weeks arrived at return on 20th May 1942.
Heinrich Zimmermann hit four ships on this patrol.
  • On 19th Apr 1942 he damaged the American 8,955 ton Axtell J Byles.
  • On 24th Apr 1942 he sank the British 7,244 ton Empire Drum.
  • On 28th Apr 1942 he sank the Dutch 5,163 ton Arundo.
  • On 8th May 1942 he sank the Canadian 300 ton Mildred Pauline.

Third Sailing
U-136 departed under Heinrich Zimmermann from St. Nazaire on 29th Jun 1942 for operations in the Central Atlantic and arrived at return on 11th Jul 1942 after more than one week.

Notes for U-136
On 11th July 1942, U-136 was part of the Hai group, WNW of the Canaries. Convoy OS-33 proceeding to South America was intercepted by the group and was then shadowed by U-116U-201U-582 and U-136. West of Madeira (Portugal) U-136 was located by the sloop HMS Pelican, the frigate HMS Spey and the French destroyer Leopard. In the course of 4 successive depth charge attacks U-136 was destroyed with the loss of all 45 crew.
