First Sailing - active patrol
U-174 left Kiel under the command of Ulrich Thilo on 30th Jul 1942 and arrived at return on 6th Sep 1942 after five and a half weeks.
07.10.1942 - 09.01.1943
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 7th Oct 1942, U-174 left Lorient under the command of Ulrich Thilo and after thirteen and a half weeks arrived at return on 9th Jan 1943.
Ulrich Thilo hit five ships on this patrol, one was from convoy TRIN-20.
  • On 31st Oct 1942 he sank the British 4,555 ton Marylyn.
  • On 1st Nov 1942 he sank the British 4,872 ton Elmdale, sailing with convoy TRIN-20.
  • On 2nd Nov 1942 he sank the Dutch 10,909 ton Zaandam.
  • On 2nd Dec 1942 he sank the Norwegian 4,977 ton Besholt.
  • On 15th Dec 1942 he sank the American 5,500 ton Alcoa Rambler.

On 27th Apr 1943 in square BB 97, U-174 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VB-25 Squadron. U-174 was destroyed in the attack.
