First Sailing - active patrol
U-177 left Kiel under the command of Robert Gysae on 17th Sep 1942 and arrived at return on 22nd Jan 1943 after just over eighteen weeks.
Robert Gysae hit nine ships on this patrol.
  • On 2nd Nov 1942 he sank the Greek 4,538 ton Aegeus.
  • On 9th Nov 1942 he damaged the British 2,588 ton Cerion.
  • On 19th Nov 1942 he sank the British 7,006 ton Scottish Chief.
  • On 20th Nov 1942 he sank the American 7,191 ton Pierce Butler.
  • On 28th Nov 1942 he sank the British 6,796 ton HMS Nova Scotia.
  • On 30th Nov 1942 he sank the British 10,799 ton Llandaff Castle.
  • On 7th Dec 1942 he sank the Greek 3,548 ton Saronikos.
  • On 12th Dec 1942 he sank the British 6,408 ton Empire Gull.
  • On 14th Dec 1942 he sank the Dutch 3,085 ton Sawahloento.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 1st Apr 1943, U-177 left Bordeaux under the command of Robert Gysae and after just over twentysix weeks arrived at return on 1st Oct 1943.
At 1020 HRS on 6th Jun 1943 in square GR 25, U-177 came under attack from an aircraft of RCAF 413 Squadron.
Robert Gysae hit six ships on this patrol, three of these ships were in convoy: two were from convoy CD-20 and one was from convoy DN-53.
  • On 28th May 1943 he sank the American 6,679 ton Agwimonte, sailing with convoy CD-20.
  • On 28th May 1943 he sank the Norwegian 7,886 ton Storaas, a member of convoy CD-20.
  • On 6th Jul 1943 he sank the Canadian 7,129 ton Jasper Park.
  • On 10th Jul 1943 he sank the American 7,176 ton Alice F Palmer.
  • On 29th Jul 1943 he sank the British 4,952 ton Cornish City, part of convoy DN-53.
  • On 5th Aug 1943 he sank the Greek 4,195 ton Efthalia Mari.

Third Sailing
U-177 departed under Heinz Buchholz from Bordeaux on 23rd Dec 1943 and arrived at return on 26th Dec 1943 after three days.
02.01.1944 - 06.02.1944
Fourth Sailing
U-177 left La Pallice under the command of Heinz Buchholz on 2nd Jan 1944 and after five weeks arrived at return on 6th Feb 1944.
