U-178 left Kiel under the command of Hans Ibbeken on 8th Sep 1942 and arrived at return on 10th Jan 1943 after more than seventeen weeks.

On the 7th Mar 1943, U-178 left Bordeaux under the command of Wilhelm Dommes and after two days arrived at return on 9th Mar 1943.
| 28.03.1943 - 27.08.1943 Third Sailing - active patrol
U-178 departed under Wilhelm Dommes from Bordeaux on 28th Mar 1943 and arrived at return on 27th Aug 1943 after more than twentyone weeks. At 0605 HRS on 24th May 1943 in square KZ 41, U-178 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 321 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Wilhelm Dommes hit six ships on this patrol, two of these ships were in convoy: One was from convoy CD-20 and one was from convoy DN-50.
