U-221 departed under Hans-Hartwig Trojer from St. Nazaire on 23rd Nov 1942 and arrived at return on 23rd Dec 1942 after over four weeks.
| 27.02.1943 - 28.03.1943 Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-221 left St. Nazaire under the command of Hans-Hartwig Trojer on 27th Feb 1943 and after just over four weeks arrived at return on 28th Mar 1943. At 2010 HRS on 17th Mar 1943 in square AK 89, U-221 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 120 Squadron. U-221 was only slightly damaged in the attack.
Hans-Hartwig Trojer hit six ships on this patrol, five of these ships were in convoy: three were from convoy HX-228 and two were from convoy HX-229.

| 03.05.1943 - 21.07.1943 Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 3rd May 1943, U-221 left St. Nazaire under the command of Hans-Hartwig Trojer and arrived at return on 21st Jul 1943 after over eleven weeks. At 0940 HRS on 12th May 1943 in square BE 45, U-221 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Hans-Hartwig Trojer hit one ship on this patrol from convoy HX-237.-
On 12th May 1943 he sank the Norwegian 9,432 ton Sandanger, part of convoy HX-237.
