| Notes for U-283 | | On the night of 10th February 1944 U-283 was attacked south-east of Iceland by a 612 SQN Leigh Light Wellington of 15 Gp CC RAF. The boat defended itself well and the Wellington was shot down. On 11th February, the 407 SQN Leigh Light Wellington RCAF (FO P W Heron) picked up a contact via radar in the dark at about 0400 Hrs. At 0410 the boat was illuminated with the Leigh Light, and Heron came in for the attack, dropping 6 D/Cs. Coming around again, radar showed the boat not moving, and then the target was lost. The Wellington circled for about an hour but U-283 had gone down with the loss of all 49 men.
