First Sailing - active patrol
U-338 left Kiel under the command of Manfred Kinzel on 23rd Feb 1943 and arrived at return on 24th Mar 1943 after just over four weeks.
At 1200 HRS on 19th Mar 1943 in square AL 57, U-338 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 228 Squadron. U-338 was not damaged by the attack.
At 1330 HRS on 19th Mar 1943 in square AL 81, U-338 came under attack from an aircraft of RCAF 423 Squadron. U-338 was heavily damaged in the attack.
At 0958 HRS on 22nd Mar 1943 in square BE 61, U-338 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 502 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.

On the 15th Jun 1943, U-338 left St. Nazaire under the command of Manfred Kinzel and after six days arrived at return on 21st Jun 1943.
At 1925 HRS on 17th Jun 1943 in square BF 45, U-338 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 206 Squadron. U-338 was heavily damaged in the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
25.08.1943 - 20.09.1943
Third Sailing
U-338 departed under Manfred Kinzel from St. Nazaire on 25th Aug 1943 and arrived at return on 20th Sep 1943 after more than three weeks.
