Notes for U-384
The action around convoy HX229 was the largest of the war. Some 40 boats attacked, sinking 21 ships. When about 800 miles South-West of Rockall, 206 SQN Fortress of 15th Group Coastal Command RAF (PO L G Clark) sighted a U-Boat within 20 minutes of the Fortress arriving over the embattled convoy. At 0925 Clark straddled the boat with D/Cs, and black oil appeared over the attack point. The oil patch was visible for hours. 47 men died with U-384, the only U-Boat lost during this convoy battle.
