Notes for U-432
On the morning of 11th March 1943, U-432 came upon HMS Harvester, stopped due to damage sustained when ramming U-444. KL Eckhardt torpedoed Harvester then remained at periscope depth to celebrate. Earlier Harvester had summoned the Free French corvette Aconit to screen her. U-432 failed to detect the Aconit which got a good ASDIC contact on the boat and D/C'd it. The surprised boat went into a violent dive to about 1,000 feet before surfacing to attempt to outrun their attacker. Aconit saw U-432 and used her guns on it, killing several crew on the bridge including Eckhardt. Aconit closed U-432 with the intention of boarding and capturing the boat, but accidentally rammed the boat which quickly sank. 26 crew were killed, 20 were captured and made POW.
The Admiralty Report on interrogation of the survivors of U-432 is available. You can find how to obtain a report here.
