First Sailing - active patrol
U-517 left Kiel under the command of Paul Härtwig on 8th Aug 1942 and arrived at return on 19th Oct 1942 after over ten weeks.
Paul Härtwig hit nine ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy LN-7, three were from convoy QS-33, one was from convoy SG-6, one was from convoy SG-6F, one was from convoy SQ-30 and two were from convoy SQ-36.

On 28th Aug 1942 he sank the American 3,304 ton Arlyn, a member of convoy SG-6.

On 3rd Sep 1942 he sank the Canadian 1,781 ton Donald Stewart, part of convoy LN-7.

On 7th Sep 1942 he sank the Canadian 1,727 ton Oakton, from convoy QS-33.

On 7th Sep 1942 he sank the Greek 3,286 ton Mount Taygetus, sailing with convoy QS-33.

On 15th Sep 1942 he sank the Dutch 2,741 ton Saturnus, sailing with convoy SQ-36.
