U-596 left Kiel under the command of Gunter Jahn on 25th Jun 1942 and arrived at return on 2nd Jul 1942 after one week.
25.07.1942 - 28.07.1942
Second Sailing
On the 25th Jul 1942, U-596 left Kiel under the command of Gunter Jahn and after three days arrived at return on 28th Jul 1942.

Third Sailing - active patrol
U-596 departed under Gunter Jahn from Bergen on 8th Aug 1942 and arrived at return on 3rd Oct 1942 after eight weeks.
Gunter Jahn hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy SC-100 and one was from convoy SC-95.
  • On 16th Aug 1942 he sank the Swedish 4,966 ton Suecia, sailing with convoy SC-95.

Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 27th Jan 1943, U-596 left La Spezia under the command of Gunter Jahn and arrived at return on 16th Feb 1943 after nearly three weeks.
On 3rd Feb 1943 in square CH 82, U-596 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-596 was not damaged by the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
On 4th Feb 1943 in square CH 81, U-596 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 48 Squadron. U-596 was not damaged by the attack.
Gunter Jahn hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 7th Feb 1943 he sank the British 246 ton HMS LCI(L)-162.
28.02.1943 - 12.03.1943
Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-596 departed under Gunter Jahn from La Spezia on 28th Feb 1943 and after more than one week arrived at return on 12th Mar 1943.
