First Sailing - active patrol
U-653 left Kiel under the command of Gerhard Feiler on 13th Dec 1941 and arrived at return on 13th Jan 1942 after four and a half weeks.
31.01.1942 - 30.03.1942
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 31st Jan 1942, U-653 left Brest under the command of Gerhard Feiler and after over eight weeks arrived at return on 30th Mar 1942.
Gerhard Feiler hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 28th Feb 1942 he sank the Norwegian 1,582 ton Leif.

Gerhard Feiler hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 17th May 1942 he sank the British 6,225 ton Peisander.
  • On 7th Jun 1942 he sank the American 840 ton USS Gannet.

Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-653 departed under Gerhard Feiler from Brest on 28th Jan 1943 and after nearly nine weeks arrived at return on 31st Mar 1943.
On 9th Feb 1943 in square BE 19, U-653 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 1 Squadron. U-653 was only slightly damaged in the attack.
On 27th Mar 1943 in square BF 72, U-653 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-653 was not damaged by the attack.
Gerhard Feiler hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy ON-166 and one was from convoy ONS-169.
  • On 24th Feb 1943 he damaged the Dutch 9,382 ton Madoera, sailing with convoy ON-166.
  • On 12th Mar 1943 he sank the American 7,176 ton Thomas Hooker, a member of convoy ONS-169.

U-653 left La Pallice under the command of Gerhard Feiler on 10th Jun 1943 and arrived at return on 11th Sep 1943 after over thirteen weeks.
At 0830 HRS on 12th Jun 1943 in square BF 73, U-653 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
At 1855 HRS on 13th Jun 1943 in square BE 94, U-653 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 228 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
15.11.1943 - 16.11.1943

On the 15th Nov 1943, U-653 left Brest under the command of Hans-Albrecht Kandler and after one day arrived at return on 16th Nov 1943.
