First Sailing - active patrol
U-701 left Kiel under the command of Horst Degen on 27th Dec 1941 and arrived at return on 9th Feb 1942 after over six weeks.
Horst Degen hit one ship on this patrol from convoy SC-62.
  • On 6th Jan 1942 he sank the British 3,657 ton Baron Erskine, sailing with convoy SC-62.

On the 26th Feb 1942, U-701 left St. Nazaire under the command of Horst Degen and after nearly five weeks arrived at return on 1st Apr 1942.
Horst Degen hit four ships on this patrol.
  • On 6th Mar 1942 he sank the British 213 ton Rononia.
  • On 7th Mar 1942 he sank the 349 ton Nyggjaberg.
  • On 8th Mar 1942 he sank the British 541 ton HMS Notts County.
  • On 11th Mar 1942 he sank the British 440 ton HMS Stella Capella.
19.05.1942 - 20.05.1942
Third Sailing
U-701 departed under Horst Degen from Brest on 19th May 1942 and arrived at return on 20th May 1942 after one day.
20.05.1942 - 07.07.1942
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-701 left Lorient under the command of Horst Degen on 20th May 1942 and after nearly seven weeks arrived at return on 7th Jul 1942.
Horst Degen hit four ships on this patrol, one was from convoy KS-514.
  • On 19th Jun 1942 he sank the American 850 ton USS YP-389.
  • On 26th Jun 1942 he damaged the Norwegian 7,256 ton Tamesis.
  • On 27th Jun 1942 he damaged the British 6,985 ton British Freedom, a member of convoy KS-514.
  • On 28th Jun 1942 he sank the American 14,054 ton William Rockefeller.
