Notes for U-753
On 13th May 1943, 423 SQN RCAF Sunderland (FL J Musgrave) was escorting convoy HX237 North-northeast of the Azores when U-753 was sighted 10 miles from the convoy at about 0830. Musgrave came out of clouds but von Mannstein put up a fight with flak, hitting the Sunderland with at least one shell. Musgrave circled and radioed the SNO who sent two of the escorts, HMCS Drumheller and HMS Lagan while the circling Sunderland and U-753 exchanged gunfire. The escorts duly arrived and so did another aircraft, so von Mannstein dived. The Sunderland took this opportunity to drop 2 D/Cs on U-753. Musgrave returned to the convoy, and Drumheller and Lagan held down U-753 with D/Cs and made Hedgehog attacks until oil and debris surfaced. U-753 was lost with all 47 crew.
