First Sailing - active patrol
U-138 left Kiel under the command of Wolfgang Lüth on 10th Sep 1940 and arrived at Lorient on 26th Sep 1940 after over two weeks.
Wolfgang Lüth hit four ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy, all of them from convoy OB-216.
  • On 20th Sep 1940 he sank the Panamanian 5,560 ton Boka, sailing with convoy OB-216.
  • On 20th Sep 1940 he sank the British 10,138 ton City of Simla, a member of convoy OB-216.
  • On 20th Sep 1940 he sank the British 13,801 ton New Sevilla, part of convoy OB-216.
  • On 21st Sep 1940 he sank the British 5,145 ton Empire Adventure, from convoy OB-216.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 8th Oct 1940, U-138 left Lorient under the command of Wolfgang Lüth and returned to Lorient on 19th Oct 1940 after one and a half weeks on patrol.
Wolfgang Lüth hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy, both of them were from convoy OB-228.
  • On 15th Oct 1940 he sank the British 5,327 ton Bonheur, sailing with convoy OB-228.
  • On 15th Oct 1940 he damaged the British 6,993 ton British Glory, a member of convoy OB-228.
05.11.1940 - 01.12.1940
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-138 departed under Peter Lohmeyer from Lorient on 5th Nov 1940 and arrived at Kiel on 1st Dec 1940 after more than three weeks.

U-138 left Kiel under the command of Franz Gramitzky on 20th Apr 1941 and after four days arrived at Bergen on 24th Apr 1941.

On the 12th May 1941, U-138 left Bergen under the command of Franz Gramitzky and arrived at Lorient on 27th May 1941 after just over two weeks.
Franz Gramitzky hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 20th May 1941 he sank the British 8,593 ton Javanese Prince.

Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-138 departed under Franz Gramitzky from Lorient on 12th Jun 1941. The boat was lost on 18th Jun 1941.
