First Sailing - active patrol
U-165 left Kiel under the command of Eberhard Hoffmann on 7th Aug 1942. The boat was sunk on 27th Sep 1942.
Eberhard Hoffmann hit seven ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: two were from convoy QS-33, two were from convoy SG-6 and three were from convoy SQ-36.
  • On 28th Aug 1942 he damaged the American 3,304 ton Arlyn, sailing with convoy SG-6.
  • On 28th Aug 1942 he damaged the American 7,252 ton USS Laramie, a member of convoy SG-6.
  • On 6th Sep 1942 he sank the Canadian 358 ton HMCS Raccoon, part of convoy QS-33.
  • On 6th Sep 1942 he sank the Greek 4,729 ton Aeas, from convoy QS-33.
  • On 16th Sep 1942 he sank the Greek 3,667 ton Joannis, sailing with convoy SQ-36.
  • On 16th Sep 1942 he damaged the American 4,570 ton Pan York, a member of convoy SQ-36.
  • On 16th Sep 1942 he damaged the British 6,625 ton Essex Lance, part of convoy SQ-36.
