Operations information for U-168
09.03.1943 - 18.05.1943
First Sailing - active patrol
U-168 left Kiel under the command of Helmuth Pich on 9th Mar 1943 and arrived at Lorient on 18th May 1943 after ten weeks.
On 8th Apr 1943 U-168 came under attack from an aircraft of RCAF 423 Squadron. U-168 was not damaged by the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
On 15th May 1943 in square BF 44, U-168 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 224 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
03.07.1943 - 11.11.1943
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 3rd Jul 1943, U-168 left Lorient under the command of Helmuth Pich and after more than eighteen weeks arrived at Penang on 11th Nov 1943.
Helmuth Pich hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 2nd Oct 1943 he sank the British 2,183 ton Haiching.
28.01.1944 - 03.02.1944
Third Sailing
U-168 departed under Helmuth Pich from Penang on 28th Jan 1944 and arrived back at Penang on 3rd Feb 1944 after six days.
07.02.1944 - 24.03.1944
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-168 left Penang under the command of Helmuth Pich on 7th Feb 1944 and after six and a half weeks arrived at Batavia on 24th Mar 1944.
Helmuth Pich hit three ships on this patrol.
  • On 14th Feb 1944 he sank the British 1,440 ton HMS Salviking.
  • On 15th Feb 1944 he sank the Greek 4,385 ton Epaminondas C Embiricos.
  • On 21st Feb 1944 he damaged the Norwegian 9,804 ton Fenris.

Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 5th Oct 1944, U-168 left Batavia under the command of Helmuth Pich. The boat was lost on 6th Oct 1944.
