Operations information for U-17
25.08.1939 - 30.08.1939
First Sailing - active patrol
U-17 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Heinz von Reiche on 25th Aug 1939 for operations in the North Sea and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven five days later on 30th Aug 1939.
31.08.1939 - 08.09.1939
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 31st Aug 1939, U-17 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Heinz von Reiche for operations off SE coast of England and returned to Wilhelmshaven on 8th Sep 1939 after just over one week on patrol.U-17 laid mines near Dover on 5th September.
29.01.1940 - 10.02.1940
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-17 departed under Udo Behrens from Wilhelmshaven on 29th Jan 1940 for operations in the Shetlands area and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven on 10th Feb 1940 after more than one week on patrol.
29.02.1940 - 07.03.1940
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-17 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Udo Behrens on 29th Feb 1940 for operations in the North Sea and returned one week later to Wilhelmshaven on 7th Mar 1940.
Udo Behrens hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 2nd Mar 1940 he sank the Dutch 695 ton Rijnstroom.
  • On 5th Mar 1940 he sank the Dutch 920 ton Grutto.
13.04.1940 - 02.05.1940
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 13th Apr 1940, U-17 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Udo Behrens for operations off Norway and the Shetlands and arrived at Kiel on 2nd May 1940 after more than two weeks.U-17 rescued German aircrew near the Norwegian coast on 26th April.

Notes for U-17
U-17 was decommissioned on 6th February 1945 at Wilhelmshaven, later it was scuttled on 5th May 1945.
