First Sailing - active patrol
U-172 left Kiel under the command of Carl Emmermann on 22nd Apr 1942 and arrived at Lorient on 3rd May 1942 after one and a half weeks.
11.05.1942 - 21.07.1942
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 11th May 1942, U-172 left Lorient under the command of Carl Emmermann and returned to Lorient on 21st Jul 1942 after just over ten weeks on patrol.
Carl Emmermann hit nine ships on this patrol, one was from convoy OS-28.
  • On 27th May 1942 he sank the British 8,940 ton Athelknight, sailing with convoy OS-28.
  • On 3rd Jun 1942 he sank the American 5,446 ton City of Alma.
  • On 5th Jun 1942 he sank the American 3,480 ton Delfina.
  • On 8th Jun 1942 he sank the American 1,654 ton Sicilien.
  • On 14th Jun 1942 he sank the American 8,289 ton Lebore.
  • On 15th Jun 1942 he sank the Norwegian 2,438 ton Bennestvet.
  • On 18th Jun 1942 he sank the British 1,958 ton Motorex.
  • On 23rd Jun 1942 he sank the 35 ton Resolute.
  • On 9th Jul 1942 he sank the American 8,379 ton Santa Rita.

Third Sailing - active patrol
U-172 departed under Carl Emmermann from Lorient on 19th Aug 1942 and arrived back at Lorient on 27th Dec 1942 after eighteen and a half weeks on patrol.
Carl Emmermann hit eight ships on this patrol.
  • On 7th Oct 1942 he sank the Panamanian 4,700 ton Firethorn.
  • On 7th Oct 1942 he sank the American 6,196 ton Chickasaw City.
  • On 8th Oct 1942 he sank the Greek 3,845 ton Pantelis.
  • On 10th Oct 1942 he sank the British 23,456 ton Orcades.
  • On 31st Oct 1942 he sank the British 4,891 ton Aldington Court.
  • On 2nd Nov 1942 he sank the British 4,966 ton Llandilo.
  • On 23rd Nov 1942 he sank the British 6,630 ton Benlomond.
  • On 28th Nov 1942 he sank the American 5,364 ton Alaskan.
21.02.1943 - 17.04.1943
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-172 left Lorient under the command of Carl Emmermann on 21st Feb 1943 and returned nearly eight weeks later to Lorient on 17th Apr 1943.
On 7th Apr 1943 U-172 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 1 Squadron. U-172 was not damaged by the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Carl Emmermann hit five ships on this patrol, three of these ships were in convoy: One was from convoy RS-3 and two were from convoy UGS-6.
  • On 4th Mar 1943 he sank the British 8,049 ton City of Pretoria.
  • On 6th Mar 1943 he sank the Norwegian 3,041 ton Thorstrand.
  • On 13th Mar 1943 he sank the American 5,565 ton Keystone, a member of convoy UGS-6.
  • On 16th Mar 1943 he sank the American 7,191 ton Benjamin Harrison, part of convoy UGS-6.
  • On 29th Mar 1943 he sank the British 5,319 ton Silverbeech, from convoy RS-3.

29.05.1943 - 07.09.1943
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 29th May 1943, U-172 left Lorient under the command of Carl Emmermann and arrived back at Lorient fourteen and a half weeks later on 7th Sep 1943.
On 2nd Jun 1943 in square BF 72, U-172 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 172 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Carl Emmermann hit four ships on this patrol, one was from convoy JT-2.
  • On 28th Jun 1943 he sank the British 4,748 ton Vernon City.
  • On 12th Jul 1943 he sank the American 6,507 ton African Star.
  • On 15th Jul 1943 he sank the British 4,558 ton Harmonic.
  • On 24th Jul 1943 he sank the British 7,133 ton Fort Chilcotin, sailing with convoy JT-2.
22.11.1943 - 13.12.1943
Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-172 departed under Hermann Hoffmann from Lorient on 22nd Nov 1943. On the 13th Dec 1943, U-172 was sunk.
