| Operations information for U-185 | 27.10.1942 - 01.01.1943 First Sailing - active patrol
U-185 left Kiel under the command of August Maus on 27th Oct 1942 and arrived at Lorient on 1st Jan 1943 after nine and a half weeks.
August Maus hit one ship on this patrol.-

On the 8th Feb 1943, U-185 left Lorient under the command of August Maus and after twelve weeks arrived at Bordeaux on 3rd May 1943. At 1530 HRS on 10th Mar 1943 in square DN 75, U-185 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VP-32 Squadron. U-185 was not damaged by the attack. On 26th Mar 1943 in square EB 22, U-185 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-185 was not damaged by the attack. On 30th Mar 1943 in square DN 75, U-185 came under attack from an aircraft of USN U-185 was not damaged by the attack. On 7th Apr 1943 U-185 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-185 was not damaged by the attack. On 1st May 1943 in square BF 84, U-185 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 502 Squadron.
August Maus hit three ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy GTMO-83 and two were from convoy KG-123.

| 09.06.1943 - 24.08.1943 Third Sailing - active patrol
U-185 departed under August Maus from Bordeaux on 9th Jun 1943. The boat was sunk on 24th Aug 1943. At 1855 HRS on 13th Jun 1943 in square BE 94, U-185 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 228 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft. At 1645 HRS on 14th Jun 1943 in square BF 74, U-185 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 10 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak and the aircraft was destroyed.
August Maus hit six ships on this patrol, five of these ships were in convoy: four were from convoy BT-18 and one was from convoy TJ-2.

The Bagé had been sailing with convoy TJ-2 until the afternoon of the 1st August. At about 1600h - 1700h local time the Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian warship which accompanied the convoy, ordered the Bagé to leave the convoy because the ship was making too much smoke.
