Operations information for U-199
13.05.1943 - 31.07.1943
First Sailing - active patrol
U-199 left Kiel under the command of Hans-Werner Kraus on 13th May 1943 for operations off Brazil. U-199 was lost on 31st Jul 1943.
Hans-Werner Kraus hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 4th Jul 1943 he sank the Brazilian ??? ton Shangri-Lá.
  • On 24th Jul 1943 he sank the British 4,161 ton Henzada.

In July 1943 a Brazilian fishing boat, the Shangri-lá, disappeared near Arrail do Cabo, north of Rio de Janeiro, with the loss of her 10-man-crew. The vessel had left Arrail do Cabo about 4 am on 4th July and was never seen again. In 2000, the Maritime Tribunal of Rio de Janeiro decided that the vessel had been sunk by gunfire from U-199, and declared the crew of the sailing vessel heroes of war. The tribunal's judgment was based on the American Report of Interrogation of U 199 survivors and a shooting report sent to BdU. On the 5th of July Kraus had reported sinking a sailing vessel by artillery on the previous day, this matches the loss of Shangri-Lá

Thanks to Christine Hillman for information about Shangri-Lá.

Air Attacks this patrol

On 3rd July 1943 while south-east of Rio de Janeiro (square GB1815) U-199 was attacked by a Mariner of VP74 (LtJg H C Carey). The crew however were alert and promptly shot down the aircraft on its first attack run before any d/cs could be released. None of the aircrew survived.

fate of U-199
On 31st July 1943 U-199 was located near St Paul's Rocks by a Mariner of VP-74 (Lt N F Smith). Smith dropped 6 d/cs which damaged the cumbersome type IXD2, so Kraus could no longer dive the boat. Two more aircraft then came in to assist the kill. A Brazilian Hudson of 7th Air Base Corps FAB (Lt S C Schnoor) circled U-199 and kept up a withering hail of fire, while a Brazilian Catalina (No.14, Cadet A M Torres) arrived and dropped d/cs in two attacks, sinking U-199.

Kraus and 11 of his crew were rescued some time later by the Barnegat. 49 of U-199's crew were lost.
