First Sailing - active patrol
U-228 left Kiel under the command of Erwin Christophersen on 6th Feb 1943 and arrived at St. Nazaire on 29th Mar 1943 after over seven weeks.
04.05.1943 - 19.07.1943
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 4th May 1943, U-228 left St. Nazaire under the command of Erwin Christophersen and after nearly eleven weeks arrived at Lorient on 19th Jul 1943.
At 1050 HRS on 7th May 1943 in square BF 72, U-228 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 58 Squadron. U-228 was moderately damaged by the attack. The boat defended itself with flak and the aircraft was destroyed.
On 4th Jun 1943 in square DF 18, U-228 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VC9 Squadron. U-228 was moderately damaged by the attack.
