First Sailing - active patrol
U-28 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Günter Kuhnke on 19th Aug 1939 for operations in the North Atlantic and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven nearly six weeks later on 29th Sep 1939.
Günter Kuhnke hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 14th Sep 1939 he sank the British 4,955 ton Vancouver City.
08.11.1939 - 18.12.1939
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 8th Nov 1939, U-28 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Günter Kuhnke for operations in the Bristol Channel and returned to Wilhelmshaven on 18th Dec 1939 after more than five weeks on patrol.
Günter Kuhnke hit two ships on this patrol, one was from convoy SL-8B.
  • On 17th Nov 1939 he sank the Dutch 5,133 ton Sliedrecht.
  • On 25th Nov 1939 he sank the British 5,144 ton Royston Grange, sailing with convoy SL-8B.


U-28 laid mines on this patrol. These mines were hit by 1 ship.
The 9,577 ton British Protesilaus was sunk by a mine on 21st Jan 1940.U-28 had laid mines on 13th November in the Bristol Channel, and 12 mines on 5th December 8 miles ENE of Morte Point (Bristol Channel).
18.02.1940 - 23.03.1940
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-28 departed under Günter Kuhnke from Wilhelmshaven on 18th Feb 1940 for operations in the English Channel and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven on 23rd Mar 1940 after nearly five weeks on patrol.
Günter Kuhnke hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 9th Mar 1940 he sank the Greek 4,979 ton P Margaronis.
  • On 11th Mar 1940 he sank the Dutch 6,236 ton Eulota.
During this patrol U-28 laid 8 mines off Nab Tower.
20.05.1940 - 06.07.1940
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-28 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Günter Kuhnke on 20th May 1940 for operations SW of Ireland and returned more than six weeks later to Wilhelmshaven on 6th Jul 1940.
Günter Kuhnke hit three ships on this patrol.
  • On 18th Jun 1940 he sank the Finnish 2,417 ton Sarmatia.
  • On 19th Jun 1940 he sank the Greek 3,443 ton Adamandios Georgandis.
  • On 21st Jun 1940 he sank the British 4,443 ton Prunella.
11.08.1940 - 17.09.1940
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 11th Aug 1940, U-28 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Günter Kuhnke for operations in the North West approaches and arrived at Lorient on 17th Sep 1940 after over five weeks.
Günter Kuhnke hit five ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy HX-66, two were from convoy OA-210, one was from convoy SC-1 and one was from convoy SC-2.
  • On 27th Aug 1940 he sank the Norwegian 1,599 ton Eva, a member of convoy SC-1.
  • On 28th Aug 1940 he sank the British 3,946 ton Kyno, part of convoy HX-66.
  • On 9th Sep 1940 he sank the British 2,434 ton Mardinian, from convoy SC-2.
  • On 11th Sep 1940 he sank the Dutch 1,966 ton Maas, sailing with convoy OA-210.
  • On 11th Sep 1940 he damaged the British 4,678 ton Harpenden, a member of convoy OA-210.

Sixth Sailing
U-28 departed under Günter Kuhnke from Lorient on 4th Oct 1940 and after two days arrived at St. Nazaire on 6th Oct 1940.
12.10.1940 - 15.11.1940
Seventh Sailing - active patrol
U-28 left St. Nazaire under the command of Günter Kuhnke on 12th Oct 1940 for operations in the North Atlantic and arrived at Wilhelmshaven on 15th Nov 1940 after nearly five weeks.
Günter Kuhnke hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 26th Oct 1940 he damaged the British 5,389 ton Matina.

Notes for U-28
U-28 sank off Neustadt Pier during training on 17th March 1944, possibly causing the loss of one man. The boat was raised shortly after, and was decommissioned at Neustadt on 4th August 1944.
