| Notes for U-280 | On 16th November 1943, while patrolling for convoy HX265, 86 SQN Liberator of 15 Grp CC RAF (FO J H Bookless RAAF) spotted U-280. As Bookless came in for attack, flak hit one engine of the Liberator and disabled it, meanwhile the D/Cs dropped by the Liberator missed. Bookless came around for a second attack and again received flak, this time the D/Cs were accurate. U-280 lost way and appeared to be down slightly. The Liberator circled for about an hour before returning to the convoy. Although the sinking was not witnessed, U-280 was never heard from again and it is presumed it went down North of the Azores as a result of this attack, costing 49 men their lives.
