First Sailing - active patrol
U-3 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Joachim Schepke on 4th Sep 1939 for operations SW of Norway and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven four days later on 8th Sep 1939.
13.09.1939 - 24.09.1939
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 13th Sep 1939, U-3 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Joachim Schepke for operations in the Heligoland Bight and returned to Wilhelmshaven on 24th Sep 1939 after one and a half weeks on patrol.
27.09.1939 - 03.10.1939
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-3 departed under Joachim Schepke from Wilhelmshaven on 27th Sep 1939 for operations SW of Norway and arrived at Kiel on 3rd Oct 1939 after six days.
Joachim Schepke hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 30th Sep 1939 he sank the Danish 1,150 ton Vendia.
  • On 30th Sep 1939 he sank the Swedish 1,198 ton Gun.
16.03.1940 - 29.03.1940
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-3 left Kiel under the command of Gerd Schreiber on 16th Mar 1940 for operations in the Skagerrak and after nearly two weeks arrived at Wilhelmshaven on 29th Mar 1940.
12.04.1940 - 19.04.1940
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 12th Apr 1940, U-3 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Gerd Schreiber for operations SW of Norway and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven one week later on 19th Apr 1940.

Notes for U-3
U-3 was decommissioned on 1st August 1944 at Neustadt. During 1945 it was used for spare parts before being captured by the British on 3rd May 1945.
