On the 14th Feb 1942, U-404 left Lorient under the command of Otto von Bülow and after seven weeks arrived at Brest on 4th Apr 1942.
Otto von Bülow hit four ships on this patrol, one was from convoy HX-178.-
On 5th Mar 1942 he sank the American 5,112 ton Collamer, sailing with convoy HX-178.

U-404 left St. Nazaire under the command of Otto von Bülow on 23rd Aug 1942 and returned over seven weeks later to St. Nazaire on 13th Oct 1942.
Otto von Bülow hit three ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: two were from convoy ON-127 and one was from convoy RB-1.

On the 21st Dec 1942, U-404 left St. Nazaire under the command of Otto von Bülow and arrived back at St. Nazaire more than six weeks later on 6th Feb 1943.
| 21.03.1943 - 03.05.1943 Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-404 departed under Otto von Bülow from St. Nazaire on 21st Mar 1943 and returned to St. Nazaire on 3rd May 1943 after just over six weeks on patrol. On 19th Apr 1943 U-404 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-404 was not damaged by the attack.
Otto von Bülow hit three ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy ON-176 and two were from convoy SL-126.
