| Notes for U-419 | On 8th October 1943 before dawn, while patrolling south-south-west of Iceland for convoy SC143, 86 SQN Liberator of 15th Grp CC RAF (FL J Wright) sighted U-419 which started to dive. 4 D/Cs were dropped however no result was evident. The SNO of the convoy then ordered Wright back to the convoy. At 0904, after returning to the scene, the Liberator saw the same U-Boat which remained on the surface as 2 D/Cs were dropped on it. After the explosions subsided U-419's bows were vertically out of the water, it went down and 15 men were seen in the water. 20 minutes later OL Giersberg was the only survivor to be found, having survived despite his leg being broken in two places.
