Operations information for U-442
17.09.1942 - 16.11.1942
First Sailing - active patrol
U-442 left Kiel under the command of Hans-Joachim Hesse on 17th Sep 1942 and arrived at St. Nazaire on 16th Nov 1942 after eight and a half weeks.
Hans-Joachim Hesse hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy SC-107 and one was from convoy UR-42.
  • On 25th Sep 1942 he sank the British 1,744 ton Empire Bell, sailing with convoy UR-42.
  • On 4th Nov 1942 he sank the British 6,690 ton Hatimura, a member of convoy SC-107.
20.12.1942 - 12.02.1943
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 20th Dec 1942, U-442 left St. Nazaire under the command of Hans-Joachim Hesse. On the 12th Feb 1943, U-442 was sunk.
On 12th Feb 1943 in square CG 49, U-442 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 48 Squadron. U-442 was destroyed in the attack.
Hans-Joachim Hesse hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy TM-1 and one was from convoy UGS-4.
  • On 9th Jan 1943 he sank the British 9,807 ton Empire Lytton, part of convoy TM-1.
  • On 27th Jan 1943 he sank the American 7,176 ton Julia Ward Howe, from convoy UGS-4.
