U-45 left Kiel under the command of Alexander Gelhaar on 19th Aug 1939 and arrived back at Kiel nearly four weeks later on 15th Sep 1939.
| 09.10.1939 - 14.10.1939 Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 9th Oct 1939, U-45 left Kiel under the command of Alexander Gelhaar. The boat was sunk on 14th Oct 1939.
Alexander Gelhaar hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy, both of them were from convoy KJF-3.-
On 14th Oct 1939 he sank the British 9,205 ton Lochavon, sailing with convoy KJF-3.

On 14th Oct 1939 he sank the French 10,108 ton Bretagne, a member of convoy KJF-3.
