Notes for U-456
On 12th May 1943, 86 SQN Liberator of 15th Grp CC RAF (FL J Wright) while escorting convoy HX 237 north of the Azores, saw U-456 at 1313Hrs. U-456 dived, but Wright attacked with a "Mark 24 mine" - an acoustic homing torpedo. It is thought this damaged the boat as it promptly surfaced. The Liberator's Wireless Operator informed the SNO of HX 237, and HMS Opportune headed for the scene. Teichert opted to try diving to escape, but never surfaced again most likely due to the damage from the earlier torpedo hit. 49 men were lost with U-456.
