First Sailing - active patrol
U-5 left Neustadt under the command of Günter Kutschmann on 24th Aug 1939 for operations off Poland and arrived at return on 8th Sep 1939 after just over two weeks.
04.04.1940 - 19.04.1940
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 4th Apr 1940, U-5 left Kiel under the command of Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock for operations SW of Norway and after just over two weeks arrived at return on 19th Apr 1940.

Notes for U-5
U-5 sank as a result of a diving accident on 19th March 1943 in position 54.25N, 19.50E (W of Pillau). 21 men were lost, there were 16 survivors.
