First Sailing - active patrol
U-505 left Kiel under the command of Axel-Olaf Loewe on 19th Jan 1942 and arrived at Lorient on 3rd Feb 1942 after just over two weeks.
11.02.1942 - 07.05.1942
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 11th Feb 1942, U-505 left Lorient under the command of Axel-Olaf Loewe and returned to Lorient on 7th May 1942 after just over twelve weeks on patrol.
Axel-Olaf Loewe hit four ships on this patrol.
  • On 5th Mar 1942 he sank the British 5,920 ton Benmohr.
  • On 6th Mar 1942 he sank the Norwegian 7,587 ton Sydhav.
  • On 3rd Apr 1942 he sank the American 5,775 ton West Irmo.
  • On 4th Apr 1942 he sank the Dutch 5,759 ton Alphacca.

Third Sailing - active patrol
U-505 departed under Axel-Olaf Loewe from Lorient on 7th Jun 1942 and arrived back at Lorient on 25th Aug 1942 after over eleven weeks on patrol.
Axel-Olaf Loewe hit three ships on this patrol.
  • On 28th Jun 1942 he sank the American 5,447 ton Sea Thrush.
  • On 29th Jun 1942 he sank the American 7,191 ton Thomas McKean.
  • On 22nd Jul 1942 he sank the 110 ton Roamar.
04.10.1942 - 12.12.1942
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-505 left Lorient under the command of Peter Zschech on 4th Oct 1942 and returned nearly ten weeks later to Lorient on 12th Dec 1942.
Peter Zschech hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 7th Nov 1942 he sank the British 7,173 ton Ocean Justice.

Air Attacks this patrol

On 10th November a 53 SQN RAF Hudson operating out of Trinidad (FS R R Sillcock RAAF) surprised U-505 on the surface South-East of Trinidad. 4 D/Cs were dropped and although U-505 had defended itself, one of the D/Cs landed directly on the aft deck gun and immediately exploded. The explosion damaged the boat but also brought down the Hudson, killing all of its crew. U-505 could not dive due to severe damage, and had two crew including a Watch Officer badly wounded. U-505 rendezvoused with U-68 for spares and with U-462 for refuelling and transfer of the wounded WO before returning to Lorient.

On the 1st Jul 1943, U-505 left Lorient under the command of Peter Zschech and arrived back at Lorient more than one week later on 13th Jul 1943.
01.08.1943 - 02.08.1943
Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-505 departed under Peter Zschech from Lorient on 1st Aug 1943 and returned to Lorient on 2nd Aug 1943 after one day on patrol.
14.08.1943 - 15.08.1943
Seventh Sailing - active patrol
U-505 left Lorient under the command of Peter Zschech on 14th Aug 1943 and arrived back at Lorient on 15th Aug 1943 after one day on patrol.
21.08.1943 - 22.08.1943
Eighth Sailing - active patrol
On the 21st Aug 1943, U-505 left Lorient under the command of Peter Zschech and returned one day later to Lorient on 22nd Aug 1943.
18.09.1943 - 30.09.1943
Ninth Sailing - active patrol
U-505 departed under Peter Zschech from Lorient on 18th Sep 1943 and arrived back at Lorient more than one week later on 30th Sep 1943.
09.10.1943 - 07.11.1943
Tenth Sailing - active patrol
U-505 left Lorient under the command of Peter Zschech on 9th Oct 1943 and returned to Lorient on 7th Nov 1943 after just over four weeks on patrol.
25.12.1943 - 02.01.1944
Eleventh Sailing - active patrol
On the 25th Dec 1943, U-505 left Lorient under the command of Harald Lange and arrived back at Lorient on 2nd Jan 1944 after just over one week on patrol.
16.03.1944 - 04.06.1944
Twelfth Sailing - active patrol
U-505 departed under Harald Lange from Brest on 16th Mar 1944. The boat was captured on 4th Jun 1944.
