| On 10th November a 53 SQN RAF Hudson operating out of Trinidad (FS R R Sillcock RAAF) surprised U-505 on the surface South-East of Trinidad. 4 D/Cs were dropped and although U-505 had defended itself, one of the D/Cs landed directly on the aft deck gun and immediately exploded. The explosion damaged the boat but also brought down the Hudson, killing all of its crew. U-505 could not dive due to severe damage, and had two crew including a Watch Officer badly wounded. U-505 rendezvoused with U-68 for spares and with U-462 for refuelling and transfer of the wounded WO before returning to Lorient. |
