| Notes for U-545 | On 10th February 1944, west of the Hebrides the 612 SQN Wellington of 15 Grp CC RAF (PO M H Paynter RAAF) got a radar contact, closed on it and sighted U-545 by moonlight. The Wellington dropped D/Cs and afterwards on passing over the attack site observed what was thought to be crewmen in life preservers in the water. U-714 answered U-545's plea for assistance and came alongside the badly damaged boat, and took off all the crew except one who had been killed. U-545 was scuttled on the 11th. Paynter received the DFC. KL Mannesmann died later in the war on 8th April 1945 during an air raid on Hamburg docks.
