First Sailing - active patrol
U-562 left Kiel under the command of Herwig Collmann on 19th Jun 1941 and arrived at Lorient on 30th Jul 1941 after nearly six weeks.
25.08.1941 - 03.09.1941
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 25th Aug 1941, U-562 left Lorient under the command of Herwig Collmann and after just over one week arrived at Brest on 3rd Sep 1941.
11.09.1941 - 15.10.1941
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-562 departed under Horst Hamm from Brest on 11th Sep 1941 and arrived back at Brest on 15th Oct 1941 after nearly five weeks on patrol.
Horst Hamm hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy ON-16 and one was from convoy ON-19.
  • On 22nd Sep 1941 he sank the British 1,590 ton Erna III, sailing with convoy ON-16.
  • On 2nd Oct 1941 he sank the British 7,463 ton Empire Wave, a member of convoy ON-19.
17.11.1941 - 06.12.1941

U-562 left Brest under the command of Horst Hamm on 17th Nov 1941 and after more than two weeks arrived at Messina on 6th Dec 1941.
Horst Hamm hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 2nd Dec 1941 he sank the British 4,274 ton Grelhead.

Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 6th Dec 1941, U-562 left Messina under the command of Horst Hamm and arrived at Pola on 29th Dec 1941 after over three weeks.
04.04.1942 - 11.05.1942
Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-562 departed under Horst Hamm from Pola on 4th Apr 1942 and returned to Pola on 11th May 1942 after over five weeks on patrol.

U-562 laid mines on this patrol. These mines were hit by 2 ships.
The 81 ton British Alliance was sunk by a mine on 29th Apr 1942.
The 157 ton British Terpsithea was sunk by a mine on 29th Apr 1942.

Eighth Sailing - active patrol
On the 5th Sep 1942, U-562 left La Spezia under the command of Horst Hamm and returned just over six weeks later to La Spezia on 18th Oct 1942.
22.11.1942 - 24.12.1942
Ninth Sailing - active patrol
U-562 departed under Horst Hamm from La Spezia on 22nd Nov 1942 and arrived back at La Spezia four and a half weeks later on 24th Dec 1942.
Horst Hamm hit one ship on this patrol from convoy KMF-5.
  • On 21st Dec 1942 he sank the British 23,722 ton HMS Strathallan, part of convoy KMF-5.
07.02.1943 - 19.02.1943
Tenth Sailing - active patrol
U-562 left La Spezia under the command of Horst Hamm on 7th Feb 1943. On the 19th Feb 1943, U-562 was sunk.
At 1325 HRS on 19th Feb 1943 in square CO 57, U-562 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 38 Squadron.
