Operations information for U-83
26.07.1941 - 09.09.1941

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 28th Sep 1941, U-83 left Brest under the command of Hans-Werner Kraus and returned to Brest on 31st Oct 1941 after more than four weeks on patrol.
Hans-Werner Kraus hit three ships on this patrol, one was from convoy HG-75.
  • On 12th Oct 1941 he sank the Portugese 2,044 ton Corte Real.
  • On 17th Oct 1941 he sank the Panamanian 2,032 ton Indra.
  • On 26th Oct 1941 he damaged the British 6,746 ton HMS Ariguani, sailing with convoy HG-75.

Note
I've been informed that the crediting of Indra to attack by U 83 is possibly wrong. Indra had sailed from Barry, South Wales on 16th Oct 1941 bound for Huelva (alone). She passed Barry Island on 17th Oct, then went missing. This ship was built in 1900, and it would have been impossible for such an old ship to reach the position suggested by Rohwer on the date given (West of Gibraltar). A lifeboat marked Indra, Panama was washed ashore at Newgate, Pembrokeshire on 12th December. The Joint Arbitration Committee believed she was lost between 17th October and 20th October, considering her a 50% Marine Loss and 50% War Loss. Thanks to Siri Lawson for this clarification.
