First Sailing - active patrol
U-861 left Kiel under the command of Jürgen Oesten on 20th Apr 1944 and arrived at return on 23rd Sep 1944 after over twentytwo weeks.
Jürgen Oesten hit five ships on this patrol, three of these ships were in convoy: two were from convoy DN-68 and one was from convoy JT-39.
  • On 20th Jul 1944 he sank the Brazilian 1,737 ton Vital de Oliveira.
  • On 24th Jul 1944 he sank the American 7,177 ton William Gaston, sailing with convoy JT-39.
  • On 20th Aug 1944 he sank the British 7,464 ton Berwickshire, a member of convoy DN-68.
  • On 20th Aug 1944 he damaged the British 8,139 ton Daronia, part of convoy DN-68.
  • On 5th Sep 1944 he sank the Greek 5,670 ton Ioannis Fafalios.

On the 1st Nov 1944, U-861 left Penang under the command of Jürgen Oesten and after one day arrived at return on 2nd Nov 1944.

U-861 departed under Jürgen Oesten from Singapore on 3rd Nov 1944 and arrived at return on 5th Nov 1944 after two days.

Fourth Sailing - active patrol
