| | The exposed wreck of U979 | | Courtesy Jürgen Meyer-Brenkhof | | U979 ran aground on May 24 1945. The crew blew up the foreward section of the boat and made it to shore on the island of Amrum. In 1988, constant strong easterly winds blew for several days preventing water from flowing back with the tide in this area. The resulting low water level exposed U979 - seen here photographed from a German naval helicopter. |
