The first torpedo attack at 04:31 CET damaged the ship. She was sunk with a torpedo finishing shot fired at 04:44 CET.

On 19 March the High Speed Transport USS Stringham (APD-6) rescued the 31 survivors. On report of her master, who believed his ship could be saved, the tug Kewaydin (AT-24) was sent to investigate the salvage possibilities. The ship was, however, beyond saving and sank the next day. The Kewaydin then proceeded to assist in towing the damaged Acme.
