The ship sank 30 minutes after being torpedoed. The vessel had been stopped in the North Atlantic by the British cruiser HMS Suffolk and was first directed to Iceland with a detachment of 10 Royal Navy marines on board. From there she was send to Kirkwall. It was on this voyage that she was torpedoed. The ten marines and 26 crew were rescued by HMS Northern Duke.
