My late father Frederick Matthews was on the Wilimantic when she was sunk by
U156.
I have a report by Deck officer Medcalf who was the senior officer in the
lifeboat my dad got away in. Both Starboard lifeboats were destroyed by gunfire, killing two crewmen, both radio officers were killed when a shell hit the radio room. The captain's name was Everett and as you say was taken prisoner.
The U boat captain apologised for the deaths and gave the crew some charts
to aid navigation. My father's lifeboat was picked up by the Norwegian ship Tamerlane six days after the sinking. My father was landed at Rio de Janeiro some 10 days later. The boat made it to the West Indies.
