The unescorted ship was proceeding on a zigzag course at 12 knots. On 7 May she was hit by one torpedo fired by U-195 at 01:37 CET. About 20 hours earlier the ship already had been missed by two torpedoes from the same U-boat. Since then Buchholz had chased the Liberty ship.
The torpedo that hit the vessel had been spotted by a lookout on the port beam, but it was too late to take evasive action. The torpedo struck to port just aft of N5 hatch. A 20 foot hole was blown in the hull, the shaft alley and the steering gear were destroyed and the aft gun platform collapsed.
The engines were secured and all hands abandoned ship in four lifeboats and one raft. The vessel sank after being hit with a finishing shot fired at 03:52 CET. On 16 May a USAAF crash boat spotted lifeboats with survivors and towed them to Ascension Island.
