The fishing vessel Changri-lá left Rio de Janeiro port on June 28, 1943. The boat's master was Seraphim Joaquim da Silva Júnior, but he was ill, for this reason he was replaced by João da Costa Marques. Because of bad weather the Changri-lá made port at Arraial do Cabo on July 4, 1943, returning to fishing the same day when the weather was improving, but disappeared with the loss of her 10-man-crew. Their bodies never were found. Only some parts of the wooden hull were washed ashore near Arraial do Cabo.
In 1944 the Maritime Tribunal of Rio de Janeiro decided that there wasn't sufficient evidence to determinate the cause of the Changri-lá's disappearance (Acórdão No 812/1944 Tribunal Marítimo do Rio de Janeiro; February 11, 1944). In 2001 there was a new finding for the case & on July 31, 2001 the Maritime Tribunal of Rio de Janeiro decided that the vessel had been sunk by gunfire from U-199 & declared the crew of the sailing vessel heroes of war. The tribunal's judgment was based on the American Report of Interrogation of U-199 survivors & a shooting report sent to BdU. On the 5th of July Kraus had reported sinking a sailing vessel by artillery on the previous day, this matches the loss of Changri-lá.
