The ship was hit by a single torpedo on starboard aft between the N3 and N4 hatches. The mainmast fell and the ship took a starboard list and sank stern first within three minutes. The survivors didn't have time to launch lifeboats and had to jump overboard. Five men working in the after hold went down with the ship.
Schacht gave the survivors 40 packs of cigarettes, a cake adorned with French writing, crackers, matches, water & 10 gallons of lime pulp made of fresh limes. "Sorry we can't help you, hope you get ashore okay" Schacht said in perfect English, according to the survivors, who were on four rafts. Eight hours later he attacked the Munger T Ball. The survivors from Norlindo were rescued by the steamer San Blas
NOTE : On 11 March, 1942 the Norlindo picked up seven survivors from the Caribsea, which had been sunk by U-158 (Rostin) the same day and took them to the Cape Henry Lighthouse.
