The ship was merely four months old and had just crossed ahead of the US ore carrier Venore while both were approaching Diamond Shoal Light Buoy.� At 02.40 CET she was hit by two torpedoes in the after tanks on the starboard side.� The flames quickly enveloped the ship, illuminating the ore carrier abaft.� The burning� Empire Gem sank later at 35 02'N-75 53'W.� Forty-three crew and six gunners were lost.� The Master and the radio operator were rescued by a US Coast Guard cutter and landed at Hatteras Inlet on January 25.�� Only three minutes later Venore was torpedoed.
